This photomicrograph of a brain tissue specimen, reveals the histopathologic changes that were found in a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also referred to as mad cow disease. Note the presence of numerous vacuoles, or microscopic holes in the gray matter, imparting the spongy appearance to the brain of BSE-affected cows.
