In 1976, excessive lead exposure was detected in 69% of 58 children, whose mothers worked in a Raleigh, N.C. battery factory. This photograph showed a public health field worker, who was collecting dust samples from carpeting that was inside the home of a child, who was amongst the group of children with the greatest lead burden. Tests performed on these collected samples demonstrated gross lead contamination of this home’s interior environment. Although maternal employment was short, their young children spent a significant portion of their lives exposed to lead.
