This 1979 photograph depicted the portrait of a bridge renovation worker, who at the time, was participating in the renovation of the Tobin Bridge in Boston, MA, which was found to be shedding paint flakes containing lead that were polluting the subjacent neighborhoods, and the Mystic River below. Workers’ exposure to airborne lead was also measured using breathing-zone samples collected from their personal sampling pumps. These samples were then analyzed for their lead content, using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Their blood levels were also tested. Note that this worker’s clothing, and his breathing mask were covered with lead-based paint dust.
