This photomicrograph depicts an egg of the parasitic trematode, Schistosoma japonicum. Note its vestigial spine, indicated by an arrow. The specimen was taken from a liver tissue biopsy. The S. japonicum egg is typically oval, or subspherical, has a vestigial spine, and is smaller (68µm - 100µm X 45µm - 80µm) than those of the other species.
