Under a magnification of 400X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of an ovum of the Oriental, or Chinese liver fluke, Clonorchis sinensis. After ingestion, the metacercariae encyst in the duodenum and ascend the biliary tract through the ampulla of Vater. Maturation takes approximately 1-month. The adult flukes, which measure 10-25mm X 3-5mm, reside in small and medium sized biliary ducts.
