Caption:
This 1974 image depicts a close view of a child’s left periorbital region, revealing the presence of what was a vaccinial lesion. This child contracted vaccinia from her twin sister, who’d just received a smallpox vaccination. After receiving a smallpox vaccination, it is imperative that the recipient take precautions in order to avoid transmitting the live virus either to another person, referred to as contact vaccinia, or spreading it to other regions of his/her own body, known as autoinoculation. See PHIL 5212 through 5215, for other views of this child’s condition.
