Caption:
Under a magnification of 3296X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image reveals a Proteus mirabilis (ATCC 29906) biofilm, growing on a polycarbonate (PC) coupon material, that had been incubated inside a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) biofilm reactor. Biofilms, or the colonization of bacteria on living and non-living surfaces, are cultured in the laboratory to investigate the link between biofilm formation, infection and the development of antimicrobial resistance.
