This historic photograph depicted a public health field walker, who was pouring Rat Kill into a rat box, in an attempt to control the rat population in an alleyway. Controlling the urban rat population is an important practice, for rats can transmit diseases either directly, by contaminating food with their urine or feces, or indirectly, occurring when fleas first bite an infected rat, then subsequently bite a person.
