This historic photograph depicts a portrait of Dr. Frederick S. McKay. In 1931, Dr. McKay discovered that a high level of fluoride in the drinking water of the Colorado Springs area was causing brown enamel stains, as well as a resistance to tooth decay among the native inhabitants, leading to the fluoridation process.
