Caption:
This 1974 photograph depicts a public health clinician, who was in the process of extracting a blood sample from the right jugular vein of a horse that had been manifesting symptoms of the arboviral disease, Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE). The blood would later be tested for VEE. The results of those tests are not known. Etiologic pathogens responsible for equine encephalitic diseases are transmitted to horses by mosquitoes, with reservoirs being various bird species.
