This illustration depicts a right lateral view of a female Simulium sp. of fly, more commonly known as the black fly. These flies are a known vector for the nematode, Onchocerca volvulus, which cause the disease, river blindness, or onchocerciasis. The female Simulium flies bite their human host, transferring the nematode. These flies are active during the day, and are found near rapidly flowing rivers and streams.
