Caption:
This photograph depicts a number of various sized phaeoid granules, of the fungus Madurella grisea. The granules are composed of phaeoid, or dematiaceous, i.e., dark-walled, septate, branching hyphae. Some Madurella spp. are a cause of eumycetoma, a fungal infection characterized by sclerotia, or large black masses of hyphae. The fungus enters the body by way of trauma, which usually affects the foot. This disease process may take several years.
