This historic image depicted Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) microbiologist, Martha Redus, practicing what at the time, was considered appropriate laboratory technique, while conducting tests for Legionella pneumophila bacteria. Martha Redus was one of the co-authors, along with Dr. Joseph McDade, of the original laboratory paper discussing Legionnaires' disease. It’s important to note, that today, use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), now includes a face mask, and latex gloves.
