This adult patient presented with scorbutic gums due to a vitamin C deficiency, a symptom of scurvy. Note the swelling and inflammation of the gingival interdental papillae, i.e., gum tissue between the teeth. See PHIL 19449, for another view of this patient’s inflamed gums.
The condition referred to as scorbutic gums involves inflammation of the gums or gingivitis, as well as gingival hemorrhages due to the breakdown of capillary components of the gingival vascular system.
