Caption:
This image depicts a close view of the chin and neck of a 30-year-old woman who had breastfed her 13-month-old infant, and subsequently developed a lesion on her left breast (PHIL 3835), which was diagnosed as yaws. The infection spread to her back (PHIL 3836), and chin (PHIL 3824). The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test, or VDRL, produced a positive result of 1:8, and was accompanied by the microhemagglutination assay (MHA-TP) test, which was also reactive, or positive. Treatment for this patient consisted of an intramuscular injection of 2.4 mega units of benzathine benzylpenicillin. At the time of this photograph, you'll note the marked improvement after only one week of antibiotic treatment, when compared to PHIL 3824.
