This is an illustration of a sand fly, or biting midge, Culicoides furens. Biting midges are small robust insects with piercing, and sucking mouthparts, that belong to the family of flies, Ceratopogonidae. A number of species transmit filarial nematodal parasites to their human hosts. Culicoides furens can transmit the parasitic nematode,Mansonella ozzardi.
