This patient was suffering from pellagra, due to a niacin, or B3 deficiency. Dermatitis and swollen tongue are common characteristics. Pellagra is a disease caused by a dietary deficiency, or failure of the body to absorb niacin, or the amino acid tryptophan. Pellagra is characterized by scaly skin sores, diarrhea, mucosal changes, and mental symptoms.
