Using indirect immunofluorescence microscopy, this photomicrograph of a herpes smear cell culture specimen, revealed the presence of the herpes virus antigen. Using monoclonal antibodies, immunofluorescence microscopy can identify the presence of the body’s antigenic response to such viral organisms with higher sensitivity than conventional microscopy.
