This 1977 photograph depicts a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) laboratorian seated at her lab’s inverted microscope. An inverted microscope make use of a light source and condenser located at the top of the unit, pointing downward above the stage, instead of below the stage, at the bottom of the scope, as in the case of a conventional microscope. This technician was in the process of recording the appearance of amniotic fluid cultures.
