This 1974 photograph depicted a laboratory technician, who was in the process of conducting a fetal hemoglobin test. Fetal hemoglobin, Hemoglobin F, is the major hemoglobin component in the bloodstream of the fetus. Such tests can detect diseases associated with abnormal hemoglobin production. Note that he was using a mouth pipette, which is now not a protocol approved activity. In addition, you can see that he was not wearing protective gloves, which are now required when performing all laboratory activities.
