This 1976 photograph depicts what had been a dead horse that was a victim of a Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) outbreak in Texas. As in humans, a number of the etiologic pathogens responsible for equine encephalitic diseases are transmitted to horses by mosquito vectors, with reservoirs being various bird species.
