Caption:
This 1969 image depicts the right lower aspect of a woman’s mouth, highlighting the sustained, residual scarring, as a result of a post-smallpox vaccination complication. Inadvertent inoculation usually results from auto-inoculation of vaccine virus transferred from the site of vaccination. The most common sites involved are the face, eyelid, nose, mouth, genitalia, and rectum. Most lesions heal without specific therapy.
