Viewed by passing light through the specimen, known as transmission illumination, this is a magnified view of a plate culture depicting the colonial growth of the fungal organism, Mycobacterium marinum, formerly known as Mycobacterium balnei. The colony revealed a smooth colonial margin. M. marinum is an animal-associated pathogen, and infection can occur following skin trauma in fresh or salt water.
