This is a magnified view of a plate culture, depicting the colonial growth of the fungal organism, Mycobacterium marinum, formerly known as Mycobacterium balnei, revealing a rough colony of granular growth containing fine red pigment deposits. M. marinum is an animal-associated pathogen, and infection can occur following skin trauma in fresh or salt water.
