This is a photomicrograph of a tissue sample extracted from a human toe, which revealed some of the histopathologic changes caused by a soil-inhabiting fungal organism of the genus Madurella. The condition known as maduromycosis is a chronic granulomatous inflammatory disease characterized by sclerotia, or large black masses of hyphae. The fungus enters the human body via trauma, which usually affects the foot. This disease process may take several years.
