This photomicrograph depicts the Gram-negative bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis subsp. vulgatus, which had been incubated in a blood agar medium, and for a 48 hour time period. B. fragilis, though a commensal bacteria that normally lives in the human gastrointestinal tract, this organism can become pathogenic under circumstances involving disruption of the normal intestinal mucosa, including trauma, or surgery.
