This photomicrograph depicts the Gram-positive bacterium, Propionibacterium acnes, which had been incubated in thioglycollate medium, for a 48 hour time period. P. acnes is a very common obligate anaerobic, non-spore forming rod, and the etiologic pathogen responsible for acne vulgaris, or pimples. It normally resides in the sebaceous glands of the skin.
