Caption:
This photomicrograph reveals the presence of numerous, Gram-negative, Bacteroides fragilis subsp. distasonis bacteria, which were cultured in a blood agar medium, and incubated for a 48 hour time period. B. fragilis, though a commensal bacteria that normally lives in the human gastrointestinal tract, can become pathogenic under circumstances involving disruption of the normal intestinal mucosa such as trauma, or surgery.
