Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph depicts Bacteroides fragilis subsp. fragilis bacteria, that had been grown in Schaedler’s broth, and processed using the Gram-stain method. B. fragilis, a Gram-negative rod, constitutes 1-2% of the normal colonic bacterial microflora in humans. It is associated with extraintestinal infections including abscesses, and soft tissue infections, as well as diarrheal diseases.
