Caption:
This photograph depicted the liver (below) and lungs (top) of a cotton rat, Sigmodon hispidus, that had been infected by the fox tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis. The infection produced numerous multi-chambered, or multilocular, thin-walled, alveolar-type hydatid cysts. E. multilocularis causes the disease alveolar echinococcosis. These organs had been infected 45-days prior to the creation of this image.
