This historic image from 1966, depicted a young girl named Kim Fisher, who after contracting a case of measles, developed encephalitis, and subsequently developed a case of mental retardation and deafness. Kim was selected as the national poster child for the organization now known as the Arc of the United States, but was formerly named the National Association for Retarded Children, in order to emphasize the need for measles prevention. Here, Kim was standing in what appeared to be a supermarket, while holding a beach ball.
