Caption:
This historic image from 1966, depicted a young girl named Kim Fisher, who after contracting a case of measles, developed encephalitis, and subsequently developed a case of mental retardation and deafness. Kim was selected as the national poster child for the organization now known as the Arc of the United States, but was formerly named the National Association for Retarded Children, in order to emphasize the need for measles prevention. In this view, Kim was wearing headphones while interacting with an instructor, who was speaking into a microphone, and pointing to words and symbols in a book as Kim listened intently.
