This historic 1961 image, depicted a public health field investigator, who was inside a slaughterhouse, examining rodent traps that had been placed earlier. The investigator was part of a plague study that had been conducted in San Francisco, California, and these trapped rodents would subsequently be brought back to the plague laboratory, to be tested for the presence of ectoparasites carrying the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis.
