Captured during a San Francisco, California plague study, this historic image depicted the typical environment that would support a community of wild rodents, capable of harboring the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis. Rodent traps had been placed in this grassy field in order to capture animals that would be tested for the presence of Y. pestis.
