Captured in San Francisco, California during a plague field study, this image depicted a patient lying in bed, in what appeared to be a clinical setting, who was suspected of being ill with human plague, caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis. At this point in his hospitalization, his blood was being drawn by a trained phlebotomist, to be analyzed for the presence of plague organisms.
