Captured in San Francisco, California during a plague field study, this image depicted two deceased mice that had been mounted to a board, and displayed in a supine position. Both mice had been dissected, thereby, exposing their thoracoabdominal organs. The mouse on the right was designated as being normal, while the mouse on the left, after having been infected with the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, displayed pathologic changes caused by the plague infection.
