Captured in San Francisco, California during a plague field study, this image depicted two deceased mice that had been mounted to a board, and displayed in a supine position. The mouse on the right had been bitten by a flea, and the bite site was circled in black ink. The bite site was found to be inflected with the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis.
