Captured during a San Francisco, California plague field study, this image depicted a Belding ground squirrel, Urocitellus beldingi, as it was standing upright on its two rear legs, while in its natural grassy field environment. U. beldingi has been shown to be associated with sylvatic plague, also caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis.
