Under a magnification of 300X, this photomicrograph reveals some of the histopathologic changes in a case of encephalitis due to the Tamiami virus, which has been found to be associated with cotton rats, Sigmodon hispidus. This virus is a member of the Tacaribe complex, a serotype of the genus Arenavirus, or New World arenaviruses.
