Caption:
Captured during a San Francisco, California plague field study, this image depicted a public health field worker, who while examining a deer mouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, allowed the wild mouse to walk on his right sleeved forearm. P. maniculatus is a known plague reservoir, and this specimen would be taken back to the laboratory to undergo a thorough examination, testing for the presence of the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis.
