Captured during a San Francisco, California plague field study, this image depicts a public health field worker, who was in the process of setting rat traps, during a plague study. Rats act as plague reservoirs, which when bitten by fleas, infect the flea, which then bites a human being, transferring the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, to its human host.
