Captured during a San Francisco, California plague field study, this historic image shows the Captain of a Japanese cargo ship on the left, being interviewed by a United States Quarantine Officer during a Public Health Inspection. Having entered the Port of San Francisco, this ship was required to undergo an inspection that would check for the presence of plague infected rodents, and their ectoparasites.
