This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis, after having been cultured in a thioglycollate medium, and incubated for a for 48 hour time period. B. fragilis is a Gram-negative rod that constitutes 1 - 2% of the normal colonic bacterial microflora in humans. It is associated with extraintestinal infections such as abscesses and soft tissue infections, as well as diarrheal diseases.
