Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Bacteroides fragilis subsp. ovatus, which had been cultured in a thioglycollate medium, and incubated for a 48 hour time period. Members of the genus Bacteroides are anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria, which are mainly found in the intestine, as normal flora. However, it can be opportunistic, under predisposing conditions like immunosuppression, tissue damage, and malignancy.
