This photomicrograph revealed the presence of the bacterium, Fusobacterium necrophorum, after having been cultured in a thioglycollate medium, for a 48 hour incubation period. F. necrophorum is a nonmotile, Gram-negative anaerobe that normally inhabitants the pharynx, gastrointestinal tract, and female genital tract. It is one of the major causative agents of Lemierre’s syndrome.
