Caption:
Under a magnification of 270X, this photomicrograph reveals histopathologic changes seen in a lung tissue specimen, harvested from a box turtle experimentally infected with Beauveria bassiana fungal organisms, a soil-borne fungus which causes white muscardine disease in insects. It proliferates throughout the insect's body, producing toxins and draining its nutrients, eventually killing it. B. bassiana is often used as an insect control agent.
