This image depicted a left anterior-oblique view of a patient's head and upper body, highlighting how the patient’s nose had been almost entirely eroded due to the disease known as yaws, or in this case, rhinopharyngitis mutilans, or gangosa, due to the nasopharyngeal involvement. Yaws is caused by the bacterium, Treponema pallidum pertenue.
