This photograph depicts a Gunnison's prairie dog, Cynomys gunnisoni, that was standing amongst a crop of MacDougal verbena, Verbena macdougalii. Note how the prairie dog’s eyes are strategically situated on the sides of its head, enabling the animal to spot incoming predatory attacks within a wider observatory range. C. gunnisoni is known to be a host to fleas that act as vectors for the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis.
