Caption:
This image depicts a photomicrograph of a black fly, Simulium ochraceum, tissue sample, and reveals some of the histopathologic changes associated with the development of an Onchocerca volvulus parasite, which parasitized the fly. O. volvulus, the filarial parasite responsible for causing onchocerciasis, or river blindness, is transmitted to its human host through the bite of Simulium spp. flies, including the black fly.
