Caption:
This image depicts a photomicrograph of a lumbar spinal cord tissue sample, in a region surrounding the anterior spinal artery, revealing degenerative changes due to an infarct of the artery, caused by the Polio Type III virus. When the neurons themselves die, Wallerian degeneration takes place, resulting in muscle weakness in those muscles once innervated by the now dead neurons. The degree of paralysis is directly correlated to the number of deceased neurons. See PHIL 2765, for another view of this condition.
